The Conscious Body

The Conscious Body began as a research project in the field of stage physicality. Its goal is to achieve an intense and creative performance, deeply rooted in the body, through specific training that enhances the performer’s stage presence. Developed by Ivan Andrade since 2011, the method has been presented through workshops, courses, and seminars in Barcelona, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The Conscious Body is a structured methodology designed to teach actors, dancers, and singers how to achieve a performance deeply rooted in the body. It provides the tools necessary for performers to access work that is intense, truthful, meaningful, and creative, by increasing their level of focus and stage presence.

The Conscious Body Artistic and Creative Development Program offers both a theoretical framework and a practical experience of the "creative flow" phenomenon: a state of work accessible to any performer once they detach from the need to "know what will happen." To access this state, one must first develop a high level of embodiment, grounding, confidence, and energy. It also requires recognizing and embracing the natural flow of fear experienced in any unknown situation, allowing this fear to transform into a source of energy—the force that enables us to access new realms of personal and artistic truth: instinctive and subconscious, revelatory and meaningful, powerful and creative.

Testimonials

  • This training has allowed me to achieve a surprising level of freedom, intensity, and lightness in my performances. I have overcome vocal and expressive challenges I never could have imagined. I highly recommend this work to any student or professional in the performing arts or music. It allows you to discover new ways of interpreting from a flexible body and mind, while accessing a layer of profoundly sincere work.

  • This work has completely changed the way I experience music today. I have learned how to truly be on stage, to experience the fear that comes with it consciously and, most importantly, how to allow it so that this fear does not control me. I have become more aware of the areas in my body where I hold tension and how to let it go. It has been incredibly surprising to see how, by releasing all this unnecessary effort, many of my technical difficulties also vanished.

  • I began with some sessions of this training with significant skepticism. I had heard that this was helpful to release patterns of tension in the body, achieving good results with singers and actors. After a month of work, I felt an incredible improvement. I learned to be more conscious and present on stage not following determined patterns or routines that made me feel safe, but allowing every performance to be new and alive, and achieving a new, free, and powerful connection with the audience. I have never lived anything like this before.

  • This training has been a true revelation for my voice. I have learned to eliminate all mental activity—usually filled with judgment and noise regarding what I do—and to sing by naturally focusing my attention on the lyrics. In doing so, I could experience my body releasing tension and connect more deeply with the meaning of what I was singing. It was then that I could express myself and access the essence of the music effortlessly, letting it happen without any need for control. It has been a deeply pleasant and addictive experience!

  • I feel now like all’s about befriending that unknown and trusting that something will come. If I relax and allow the fear to be there, a sense of aliveness and playfulness joins me onstage. Putting myself out there and deciding not to know what will come — I love that.

  • It’s been amazing to learn this possibility of befriending difficult emotions in the context of acting and moving towards them rather than trying to avoid them — dancing with them, allowing them to transform into a more available, freer flow of energy. And feeling how that takes my work to a completely different level.
