Ripples

From the end of the 19th century and for a period of about 100 years, Japan developed a significant part of its sugar cane industry in the recently colonized Taiwan. At the end of the 20th century, when the colony was returned to the Taiwanese people, they left behind an influential architectural and cultural legacy that still characterizes the areas of greatest colonial settlement today.

Ripples is a site-specific performance that recovers the memory of the former Tsung-Yeh Sugar Factory in the Tainan District. Originally built and managed by Japanese landowners, the site has been transformed today into theTsung-Yeh Arts & Cultural Centre.

Commissioned by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government (Taiwan) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arts centre
